Awami League presidium member Mohammad Nasim on Tuesday urged the Home Minister to launch a combing operation to hunt down the culprits behind the recent Fatikchhari incident that left three Awami League men killed.
“We demand the Home Minister conduct a combing operation in Fatikchhari area to capture those behind the incident immediately,” he said.
The AL leader said this while addressing a protest rally organised by Bangabandhu Academy at the National Press Club.
Three people were killed and 120 others, including 10 policemen, injured in a clash between the activists of BCL-Jubo League and Hefajat-e-Islam and villagers at Kazirhat in Fatikchhari upazila on Thursday (Apr 11).
“BNP MP Salauddin Quader Chowdhury and his party can’t avoid the responsibility of the brutal killing carried out by Jamaat-Shibir men,” Nasim said.
Pointing finger at BNP chief Khleda Zia, Nasim said, “You (Khaleda) will never be able to return to power through killing and attacking your rivals. You’re the only leader in the country who hasn’t yet condemned such attacks.”
In an oblique reference to Khaleda’s remarks that the army will play the due role in due time, Nasim said, “The patriotic army won’t work at anyone’s instigation.”
About the detained opposition leaders, Nasim said,” We believe the detained BNP leaders will come out of jail through a legal process. They maybe our political opponents, but we don’t want them to stay in jail.”
Turning to the upcoming national election, the senior AL leader urged the women and the young generation to take their decisions judiciously whom they will actually pick up as their representatives through the polls. “If you (people) stay with Sheikh Hasina, Bangladesh will, Inshallah, become the most modern, liberal country of the 21st century.”
Chaired by AL city unit joint general secretary Haji Mohammad Selim, the programme was addressed, among others, by its senior vice president Foyez Uddin Miah and Krishak League vice-president MA Karim.
