Hosts Bangladesh confirmed their quarter-final berth in the ICC Under-19 World Cup with a comprehensive win over Scotland at the Sheikh Kamal International Cricket Stadium in Cox’s Bazar on Sunday.
Nazmul Hossain kept his rich vein of form and scored an unbeaten 113 to help his side reach 256-6 before Bangladeshi bowlers bundled out Scotland for 142 to pick a 114-run victory.
Bangladesh got off to a poor start as their in-form opener Pinak Ghosh was dismissed for a duck and one-down Joyraj Sheikh soon followed him with 13 to put them on 17-2 before Nazmul revived the innings with century stands.
He added 101 runs with opener Saif Hasan, who made 49 off 108 balls, to steady the ship before formed a partnership of 100 runs off just 86 balls with skipper Mehedi Hasan Miraz to put a substantial score on the board for Junior Tigers.
Miraz made 51 off 49 while Nazmul remained not out with 10 boundaries in his 117-ball innings that helped him become the highest ever run scorer in youth one-day international history.
When he was on 60, he struck a lovely boundary through the offside to cross Pakistan’s Sami Aslam, who has 1695 career runs, and achieve the glory.
Medium pacer Mohammad Ghaffar, who picked up both the Bangladeshi openers, ended up with 4-60 for Scotland.
Scotland made a solid start in the reply and made a 48-run opening stand but Bangladesh skipper Miraz got rid of his counterpart Neil Flack for 28 in the 13th over to break the resistance.
The other bowlers picked up the remaining wickets in regular intervals to secure the crushing win.
Scottish two-down batsman Azeem Dar made a 50 off 89 but that went in vain as the last six batsmen of his side were unable to score in double digit and they were crumbled in 47.2 overs.
Bangladeshi seamer Mohammad Safiuddin, who has caught attentions of many for his ability to bowl frequent yorkers, got 3-17 and left arm spinner Saleh Ahmed Shawon grabbed 3-27 to rattle the Scottish batting.
Another slow left-arm spinner Ariful Islam, who replaced suspended Sanjit Saha, got two wickets and Miraz got one wicket for hosts to script their second win in the tournament.
Bangladesh will face Namibia, who beat and throw defending champions South Africa off quarter-final to confirm their own berth, on Tuesday at the same venue in the match that has become the group champion decider.
