Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh has decided not to enforce hartal on Thursday.
The platform on Monday threatened if the former minister Latif Siddique is not arrested by 48-hour, they will enforce countrywide hartal on Thursday.
The decision came from emergency meeting held at Al-Jamiatul Ahlia Darul Ulum Moinul Islam (better known as Hathazari Madrasa) on Tuesday with Hefazat Chief Allama Shafi in the chair.
Organising secretary of Hefazat-e-Islam Azizul Haque Islamabadi confirmed it to the Dhaka Tribune.
He said: “As Latif Siddique surrendered to the police and he is now at jail, we have decided not to enforce hartal on Thursday.”
Shafi demanded to pass law in the current session of the Jatiya Sangsad against the persons who make derogatory comments against Islam and Prophet Hazrat Mohamamd (SM), ensuring the highest punishment to them, he added.
Earlier in the day, Latif Siddique was arrested after he had surrendered at Dhanmondi police station.
A Dhaka court has sent expelled minister Abdul Latif Siddique to jail in a case filed for hurting the countrymen’s religious sentiment by making controversial remarks on Islam and Tablig Jamaat.
Metropolitan Magistrate Atiqur Rahman passed the order as no bail petition was filed for Latif Siddique.
Latif returned to Dhaka on Sunday evening.
On October 28, the court issued a warrant of arrest against lawmaker Latif as he did not appear before the court despite being summoned.
Pro-BNP lawyer Abed Raja filed the case on October 2 with the Dhaka’s Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court.
Six other cases have been filed with the same court against Latif for his controversial remarks made on September 28 during a meeting in New York.
A number of cases have been filed with different courts across the country and most of the courts issued arrest warrants against Latif.
