The High Court (HC) on Tuesday lifted a previous ban on providing new gas connections by the government to households and industrial units.
A joint bench of judges Naima Haider and Jafar Ahmed passed the order after hearing a petition filed by advocate Monjil Murshed on behalf of Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh (HRPB) seeking withdrawal of its previous order considering public interest.
The HC imposed the ban on providing new gas connections on November 8, 2012 when Advocate Asaduzzaman on behalf of the HRPB filed a petition seeking a ban on giving new gas connections considering environmental degradation.
Adv Monjil said now there will be no bar on giving new gas connections.
The government imposed the ban on giving news gas connections to industrial units on July 22, 2009 while to households on July 13, 2010. Despite the ban, some illegal gas connections were given through corruption.
