Describing Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s rule as a formalin era, BNP on Sunday alleged that the current regime has spread everywhere the dangerous poison in the country destroying the economy, politics and society.
“The Prime Minister has said they’ve kept BNP alive with formalin. We all know formalin is a very dangerous chemical… she also said now formalin is everywhere. In fact, her rule is the era of formalin,” said BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
Addressing a press conference, he further said, “They (govt) have very competently used formalin in politics, society and economy.”
The press conference was arranged at BNP’s Nayapaltan central office in reaction to the Prime Minister’s comments involving BNP at her Saturday’s press conference.
Sought her comment about BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia’s remarks that they were giving the government some time to rot fully, the Prime Minister said, “It’s they who are rotting. We are trying to keep BNP alive with formalin.”
Reacting to the Prime Minister’s remark, Fakhrul said, “We want to equivocally say BNP is not run by at anybody’s mercy. BNP is moving ahead with people’s affection and support.”
Fakhrul alleged the Prime Minister’s way of talking, choice of words and attitude at the press conference were devoid of political etiquette. ”She has not hesitated to attack her political opponent using non-political language. Her remarks have exposed her autocratic, dictatorial and fascist face.”
The BNP leader also allayed that the Prime Minister even directly and indirectly threatened the judges over the Narayanganj seven murders.
Accusing Sheikh Hasina of running the state ignoring people’s and the world community’s opinions, he urged the Prime Minister to shun her self-conceit and vanity and hold a fresh election under a non-party administration as soon as possible.
Or else, the BNP leader warned, people will oust this ‘fascist and autocratic regime’ through a street movement.
Coming down hard on the Prime Minister for claiming her government was formed with people’s mandate, Fakhrul said. “The Prime Minister said why will they arrange midterm polls as her party has got 40 percent votes? There was no voting in 154 constituencies at all, and Awami League didn’t get even five percent of votes in other seats. So, how did she claim they have been elected? “
The BNP spokesman branded the government as illegal and immoral and said the current regime is holding office depending on arms and repressive acts. “No government in the world could stay in office with five percent votes and this regime won’t be able to do so either.”
Criticising the Prime Minister for her remarks that Rab disbandment is not possible as it has now become an institution, Fakhrul said the government is trying to keep Rab to use the force for hanging onto power.
He said Rab is now claiming lives instead of protecting people as the government has destroyed the force by using it for political purpose. “Rab must be disbanded…it’s now a mass people’s demand.”
About the Prime Minister’s remarks that BNP’s birth was illegal, Fakhrul said the party was formed in a legal and democratic atmosphere. “Awami League was revived with the same rule by which BNP was formed. So, it has to think whether Awami League is legal if BNP is illegal.”
He also urged the government to hold an election under a non-party administration. “Then it’ll be proved who is legal who is illegal, and who is popular and who has got alienated from people.”
He also trashed Hasina’s remark that BNP had made a mistake by not joining the January-5 election saying people through boycotting the polls proved that BNP’s decision was right. “Upazila polls have also proved no fair election can be held under the Awami League regime.”
Fakhrul voiced deep concern over the killing of a Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) member, Nayek Mizanur Rahman, by Myanmar Border Guard Police (BGP) along the Bandarban border.
He alleged that the government in a planned way destroyed BDR, now BGB, and demoralised the Army men to safeguard the country’s porous border.
