Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Saturday sought support of the expatriate Bangladeshis so that their relatives living in Bangladesh vote for Awami League-led grand alliance to continue the trial of the war criminals and ensure country’s socio-economic progress.
“Please send message to your relatives in Bangladesh to vote for ‘boat’, make the AL-led grand alliance victorious in the next general election and thus give it another chance to serve the country,” she said at a reception accorded by the local Bangladeshi community at Hotel Hilton in New York, which was organized by the US Awami League.
The Prime Minister said: “We’ve started getting verdicts against the war criminals. Insha-Allah, we’ll execute the verdicts and will also have to continue the trial process.
“I urge you to allow the Grand Alliance to assume office another time to continue the war crimes trial and ensure country’s socio-economic development so that it does not plunge into darkness again,” she added.
Again accusing the opposition leader of resorting to falsehood as she did before 1996, Hasina said: “It is very difficult to face such falsehood.”
She said: “The previous BNP-Jamaat alliance government had plunged the country into darkness, but the Awami League government has brought the country back into the path of light.”
Referring to the 48-hour ultimatum given by the opposition leader on May 4 followed by the Dhaka siege programme to oust the government, the Prime Minister repeated her allegation that Khaleda Zia had patronized the Jamaat-Shibir-Hefazat men and they set fire to banks, BHBFC, destroyed the road islands and burnt hundreds of copies of holy Quran – a rare incident in the world history.
About the picture of changing ‘gilaf’ of the holy Kaba Sharif, she said the Jamaat-Shibir men had portrayed it as a human chain demanding release of a war criminal. “Those who could resort to falsehood even in case of holy Kaba Sharif, how could they believe in Islam? How could our opposition leader stay with them?”
lleging that the BNP-Jamaat-Shibir men conducted false propaganda ahead of the five city corporation polls this year where the BNP-backed candidates won the elections, Hasina said they had used women to conduct false propaganda with the copies of holy Quran in their hands.
About the ‘false propaganda before the city corporation polls that the imams have been killed so there will be no prayers in mosques, no janaza prayers, tarabih and eid prayers’, she said that such propaganda has now come into light for those who were confused before.
“Those who told lies taking holy Quran in their hands, I don’t know what’ll happen to them. The Almighty Allah will try them,” she added.
Accusing the BNP-Jamaat government for destroying the national flag carrier Biman Bangladesh Airlines, the Prime Minister said that her government has turned Biman into international standard.
She also hoped to restart direct flight of Biman on Dhaka-New York route after getting two aircraft from Boeing in February or March of 2014.
Hasina said people will caste their votes for Awami League, because whenever it assumes office, country witnesses socio-economic development, attains food security and sees increased power generation.
Per capita income has now rose to $ 1044 alongside restoration of peace and security of the country’s people while healthcare services has reached the doorsteps of common people and Bangladesh turned digital much before the targeted 2021, she said.
On the other side, she said: “BNP-Jamaat means corruption, killings and terrorism. We’ve gained rewards for the country time and again, but BNP-Jamaat brought punishments,”
About the ‘unbridled corruption and money laundering’ by the opposition leader’s son for which the FBI gave deposition in Bangladesh court, the Prime Minister said: “What could be more shameful than this?… this is a shame for the country’s expatriates, for country’s people and the nation. BNP-Jamaat put people to shame,”
Claiming that her government has run the country with honesty and worked for ensuring peoples’ welfare, Hasina expressed her firm resolve to turn Bangladesh into a dignified nation that will be able to keep its head high in the world community.
Awami League advisory council member Amir Hossain Amu and Tofail Ahmed, Workers Party president Rashed Khan Memon, Jatiya Party leader Barrister Anisul Islam Mahmud, JSD leader Mainuddin Khan Badal, PM’s Special Assistant Abdus Sobhan Golap, US Awami League president Dr Siddiqur Rahman and other leaders of US Awami League also spoke on the occasion.
