Hasina proposed to be lifelong DUCSU member, VP Nurul differs
Dhaka University’s vice chancellor Akhtaruzzaman has proposed that prime minister Sheikh Hasina be made a lifelong member of the university’s students’ union.
The VC, who holds the position of president of Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU), made the proposal at its first meeting on Saturday, after the union was elected, amid controversies, after 28 years.
“The DUCSU election was held on 11 March at the personal initiative of prime minister Sheikh Hasina. So, the university administration wants she be made a lifelong member of DUCSU,” the vice chancellor told the meeting at DUCSU bhaban.
DUCSU vice president Nurul Haq, however, showed his dissent over the proposal.
“There was an allegation of vote rigging. As the DUCSU was formed through a controversial election, it is better not to include a respected person like the prime minister,” said Nurul, who led the general students’ movement for quota free public services
Of the 25-panel DUCSU, 23 members were elected from Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), the student wing of the ruling Awami League.
Two members including Nurul were elected from quota movement panel.
