Awami League president, Sheikh Hasina, also the prime minister, on Sunday asked the party leaders and activists to go to the doorsteps of people to convey them the message about development activities her government has carried out as the next general election is approaching fast.

‘Elections will be held in the coming days, it’s must for us to go to the doorsteps of mass people if we want to win the next polls for the third consecutive time…we have to convey the message of development the Awami League government has carried out,’ she said.

Sheikh Hasina said this in her introductory speech on the council session of the ruling Awami League’s 20th national conference on the second day of the conference at the Institution of Engineers Bangladesh in Dhaka.

She stressed the importance of projecting the development programmes of the government that have been completed and are going to be completed, aimed at ensuring the welfare of people.

‘We’ve to convince the government that the country’s socioeconomic development needs to be maintained if Awami League wants to retain power,’ she said, reports United News of Bangladesh.

Hasina asked the party leaders and activists to stay alert so that those who pampered the war criminals, those who killed people through arson attacks and involved in money laundering cannot come to power.

‘I want to see the honesty to prevail among the leaders and activists of Awami League …I want to see its future leaders are elected to make the party even stronger,’ she said.

Hasina said, ‘Awami League is my family and kith and keen. I didn’t gave such a long time even to my children what I did for the party,’ she said in an emotion-chocked voice.

She directed the party leaders and activists to go to people to maintain the legacy of power for the development of the country.

The prime minister reached the venue at 10:00am and began the final session of the conference.

Around 6,570 councilors are attending the council session which will elect the party’s highest policymaking new working committee.

Party advisory council member Yusuf Hossain Humayun, prime minister’s adviser Mashiur Rahman and former secretary to the government Rashidul Alam would conduct the election as election commission.

Like Saturday, entry of any unauthorised person is restricted to Suhrawardy Udyan and surrounding areas for Sunday on security grounds.
