Hanif hits back at Fakhrul for Koko remarks

Hitting back at BNP acting secretary general for terming the handover of a ‘symbolic cheque’ of Arafat Rahman Koko’s laundered money a drama, Awami League joint general secretary Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif called it baseless.

“Mirza Fakhrul resorted to an evil tactic to save his party leader as there’s no valid information or data in support of his contention,” he said.

In his party’s reaction to BNP spokesman’s remarks over Koko’s laundered money brought back by the government, Hanif made the counter attack at a press conference at the AL president’s Dhanmondi office in the evening.

Referring to the verdict of a case against BNP chairperson’s younger son Arafat Rahman Koko, Fakhrul at a press conference earlier in the day said the Anti Corruption Commission has in fact staged a drama.

“The attorney general against Koko’s name handed over a big size fabricated cheque like that of Cricket award to the Anti Corruption commission. Handing over such a cheque in public was aimed at maligning Arafat Rahman Koko, our party chairperson and BNP,” the BNP leader told the press conference.

Disapproving Fakhrul’s claim, Hanif said the BNP leader made a hollow statement only to save his party. “He even parried questions by reporters in this regard.”

The joint secretary claimed that the indulgent of BNP-Jamaat regime in unbridled corruption through creating Hawa Bhaban has been proved after the return of the money siphoned off by Koko.

On Tuesday, attorney general M Mabubey Alam at a programme handed over a ‘symbolic cheque’ of the Oversees Bank of Singapore worth US$ 956,387.4 (Tk 740.24,35 crore) allegedly siphoned off by Arafat Rahman Koko to ACC chairman M Badiuzzaman.

Hanif said they brought back a small amount of money siphoned off by the BNP regime. “We hope to bring back more laundered money under the tenure of this government.”

The AL leader also alleged that not only Koko and his brother Tarique Rahman but also BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia was involved in widespread corruption as a head of the government. “She turned into a big corrupt by embezzling the money of orphans.”

Rejecting Fakhrul’s another claim that the government has filed ‘false’ cases against Tarique and Koko to gain political interest, Hanif said the AL-led regime did not lodge any case with a motive to harass any one. “The money laundering case against Koko had been filed by the caretaker government.”

BNP that had misappropriated and siphoned off the money of the poor are again dreaming of returning to power to do so, the AL leader observed.

He urged the country’s people to remain alert so that the corrupt BNP cannot return to power.
