People living at remote villages of Naikhyangchari in Bandarban hill district heard heavy firing across the border in Myanmar Saturday afternoon after a two-day break.
Local people said that a gunshot damaged windowpane of a CNG-run autor0cikshaw at Uttarpara at about 2:45pm when its driver was heading towards Gumdum border.
Gundhum union parishad chairman AKM Zahangir Aziz, also the union Awami League president, confirmed the incident and said that none was injured in the incident.
A senior government official told New Age that it was not sure who were responsible for the firing as ethnic Arakan Army and Myanmar junta forces continued their exchange of fire.
The official said that the local people heard gunshots and soon they found the windowpane was damaged.
Local people said that Abu Taher was driving the three-wheeler, stopped at Uttarpara, and went to a shop to buy betel leaf when the gunshot hit the windowpane.
Thailand-based news portal The Irrawaddy reported that the ethnic Arakan Army seized another Myanmar military battalion base amid an escalating offensive in Rakhine State on January 30 after several days of fighting in historic Mrauk-U Township.
Clashes were also reported on January 31 in Rakhine’s Minbya, Kyauktaw and Rathedaung townships, it reported.
The Arakan Army has seized over 160 junta positions, including Pauktaw town near Sittwe and Paletwa Township in Chin State, since it expanded Operation 1027 to Rakhine on November 13, 2023, it reported.
Local people in Bandarban said that no gunshots were heard on Thursday and Friday.
