Guns can’t perpetuate power, go for polls, Khaleda to govt

Issuing a warming to the government that the ‘guns which it is now using to cling power’ will turn out to be a great danger for it one day, BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia on Tuesday urged the regime to hold a fresh election through talks to avoid dire consequences.

“Don’t show the power of guns. No one could cling to power with the power of firearms and you won’t be able to do so either. The guns you are now using to hang onto power will turn out to be a danger for you one day and you’ll have to face a harsher punishment and dire consequences,” she told an Iftar party.

Khaleda continued: “Watch your steps before the time runs out. Hold a fair election under a non-party caretaker government through talks to restore democracy and the rule of law and peace in the country.”

Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), one of the partners of the BNP-led 20-party alliance, arranged the Iftar at Ladies’ Club in the city’s Eskaton area.

In her brief address before the Iftar, Khaleda said the country’s law and order situation has totally collapsed as there is no legitimate government in the country.

“The repressive acts, killings and enforced disappearances are increasing day by day. Once only politicians had been made disappeared, but now people of all strata even journalists are falling victims to enforced disappearances,” she said.

Khaleda, a former Prime Minister, claimed that the ruling party men and members of the police, Rab and intelligence are involved in the incidents of forced disappearance.

Reiterating her demand for disbanding Rab, Khaleda said, “This force has made many people disappeared. Killings and enforced disappearances won’t stop as long as Rab exists. They’re now killing people like serial killers in exchange for money.”

She also alleged that the government has failed to control the ruling party men as they are indulging in killings, criminal activities and plundering public money.

The BNP chief said they are preparing to wage a strong and united movement after the Eid to dislodge this regime and save the country from misrule.

She called upon all patriot and repressed people and parties to get united under the same umbrella to put up a strong resistance against the government.

“I earlier called upon all to rally round the same umbrella and Samyabadi Dal has joined us while some other parties are in touch with us. I want to say again it’s not the time to judge who is small or big and which party is left or right. We all must rally round the same platform to dislodge this repressive regime,” Khaleda added.

She entered the rally venue around 6:43 pm and exchanged pleasantries with the guests.

Senior leaders of BNP and the 20-party alliance also took part in the Iftar party.

BNP standing committee members RA Gani, Tariqul Islam, Jamiruddin Sircar, MK Anwar, Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan, Rafiqul Islam Miah, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, Nazrul Islam Khan, LDP chief Oli Ahmed, Jagpa President Shafiul Alam Prodhan, Jamaat central leader Abdul Halim, Islam, Islami Oikya Jote chairman Abdul Latif Nezami, Khelafat Majlish ameer Principal Muhammad Ishaq, Kalyan Party chief Syed Muhammad Ibrahim, Labour party chairman Mustafizur Rahman Iran and Islamic Party chief Abdul Mobin were, among others, present.
