A security guard was bludgeoned to death while on duty at an ATM booth of the Dutch-Bangla Bank Ltd on Nurjahan Road in the capital’s Mohammadpur early yesterday.
The motive behind the murder was not clear, as no attempts had been made to break into the booth, said police.
The deceased, Enamul Haque, 18, an employee of private security company Elite Force, was found dead with a deep wound in the head in front of the ATM booth around 5:20am, Javed Chowdhury, in-charge of the company’s Mohammadpur zone, told The Daily Star.

“My night supervisor called me around 5:20am. He told me that a staff of another security company had informed him over the phone that one of our security personnel lay bleeding in front of his station,” said Javed.
Footage from a close-circuit camera inside the ATM booth shows that Enamul was at his post till 5:10am, Biplob Kumar Sarker, deputy commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (Tejgaon), told The Daily Star.
The footage shows that a middle-aged woman crossed the street and talked to Enamul, who immediately moved away from the camera’s line of vision at 5:10am. It was the last time he was seen on the camera.
There were seven more cameras inside the booth, but none of those captured the murder.
However, the footage showed that a group of four to five people gathered in front of the booth around 5:26am, said the DMP deputy commissioner.
Biplob said Enamul was killed between 5:10 am and 5:26am.
Police arrived at the scene around 6:00am and took Enamul to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where doctors pronounced him dead.
His body was then sent to Dhaka Medical College morgue for an autopsy.
Sources at the morgue told The Daily Star that Enamul was hit hard in the head by a heavy object.
The DMP deputy commissioner said murderers didn’t even try to unlatch from Enamul’s body the key to the ATM booth which had been locked at night.
Biplob said the woman, who was seen talking to Enamul on the footage, is being considered as the primary suspect of the murder.
He said the murder might have been committed following some personal feud.
However, Enamul’s parents, who live in Mohammadpur, said their son didn’t have any enmity with anyone.

All the killings are just stray incidents and the law & order is ‘completely under control’ of our so powerful govt. The 16,000+ people killed during the tenure of the present govt (as the HM) told the parliament a few weeks ago were just destined to die in a country the law & order of which is fully under control. Had it not been so, how many people would have died is anybody’s guess. Indeed we are shameless people. Without a blink of the eye we can lie to the people without feeling a bit pinch of shame.
