Green campaigners have called a six-hour shutdown in Dhaka on January 26 next year if the government does not back off coal-fired thermal power plant at Rampal of Bagerhat.
Announcing a series of programmes, member secretary of the National Committee to Protect Oil, Gas, Mineral Resources, Power and Port Anu Muhammad said the shutdown would be enforced for the interest of the people if the government ignores the demand.
The committee announced the programmes after a grand rally at Central Shaheed Minar in Dhaka.
The committee would observe the Martyred Intellectuals Day on December 14 and Victory Day on December 15 as Day to Protect Sunderbans.
It would also observe December 26 and demand day and go out on nationwide demonstrations to press home its demands.
On January 7, a global protest day would be observed 43 Indian green campaigners and expatriate Bangladeshis.
On January 14, the committee would roll out an alternative plan on power and energy.
The grand rally demanding scrapping of the coal-based thermal power plant near Sunderbans at Bagerhat’s Rampal began at Central Shaheed Minar in Dhaka at around 3:00pm Saturday.
Protesters from across the country gathered venue to conclude their ‘Dhaka march’ sponsored by the National Committee to Protect Oil, Gas, Mineral Resources, Power and Ports.
Hundreds of Rampal protesters were seen gathering on the premises of the Central Shaheed Minar, witnesses said.
The rally began paying tributes to Cuban revolutionary leader Fidel Castro. One-minute silence was also observed in memory of the iconic leader.
Since noon, a cultural programme was held at the venue with performance of various troupes with revolutionary songs.
Earlier on November 24 the National Committee started its ‘March towards Dhaka’ from seven divisional headquarters demanding cancellation of the Rampal Power Plant near the Sunderbans.
