BNP standing committee member Barrister Moudud Ahmed on Wednesday said the government’s billboard display over its successes actually marks the last bell of the Awami League-led grand alliance regime.
“The billboards have proved that the government has become totally isolated. It also demonstrates the last sign of its fall,” he said.
Moudud came up with the remark while addressing a discussion, titled ‘Public sufferings, government’s information terrorism and citizens’ musing’ arranged by Democratic Movement at the Jatiya Press Club.
The BNP leader said the government will not be able to woo people by hanging billboards. “You can hang thousands of billboards but you can’t win the hearts of thousands of people.”
Mentioning that people want the rule of law alongside development, Moudud said, “Ayub Khan had wanted to cling to power by hanging billboards, but had to embrace the fall within a year. I think this government will meet the same fate within months.”
He also opined the Anti Corruption commission should find out those who hung the billboards in the dark of night spending crores of taka and mete out punishment to them. “From where did they get the money? It should be investigated.”
The former minister said people in the elections to five city corporations have sent out a strong message that they want a change in the regime.
He also warned that they will take their movement to the final stage by October 25, and compel the government to arrange the next polls under a non-party administration.
