The government is yet to know about the exact whereabouts of the war crimes convict, fugitive Abul Kalam Azad alias Bachchu Rajakar, Foreign Minister Dr Dipu Moni told Parliament on Tuesday.
“It has been known from various reliable sources that he (Bachchu Razakar) is staying abroad. Information about his exact whereabouts is yet to be known,” she said, responding to a scripted question of Begum Faridunnahar Laily (Women Seat-18).
Dipu Moni said Azad went into hiding to avoid arrest before the warrant of arrest was issued. The International Crimes Tribunal awarded him death penalty on January 21 for his crimes against humanity during the Liberation War period in 1971.
She said it is a big task to implement the court’s verdict by bringing back a convicted fugitive. “This is not only under the jurisdiction of the Foreign Ministry.”
The Foreign Minister said her ministry is working with the Law Ministry in a coordinated way to bring back Abul Kalam Azad. “We firmly believe that he (Bachchu Rajakar) will soon be brought back to execute the verdict.”
Bringing to trial the war criminals and those who had committed crimes against humanity in 1971 was one of the election pledges of the present government, she added.
