The government has decided to confiscate movable and immovable properties of the six self-confessed fugitive killers of Bangabandhu and of their family members.
The decision was taken at a recent meeting of the national task force supervising the process of extraditing the fugitive killers of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
Officials concerned said they came to know that these criminals have properties in the capital’s Gulshan, Mohammadpur and Dhanmondi areas and in Comilla and other places in the country.
The officials said they have already instructed the Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha to take necessary actions to confiscate the properties.
They, along with their immediate relatives, have money saved in a few branches of Agrani and Sonali banks, which will be confiscated as well.
Instructions were given to the respective banks and financial institutions to freeze the accounts and to submit the deposited money to the central bank.
Cell phones belonging to their relatives will also be tracked to see if the criminals try to contact any third parties.
The banking and financial institution division has been instructed to hand over any assets belonging to the criminals to the Bangladesh Bank.
The government has found information about one of the six convicts, Risaldar Mosleh Uddin.
He has been seen in India and Hamburg, Germany. The home minister received important information regarding this matter during his visit in Germany.
Meanwhile, self-confessed murderer SHMB Noor Chowdhury was said to have got the citizenship in Canada, but the government has now confirmed that he hasn’t been given citizenship yet.
He has asked for political asylum there, but the decision from the Canadian government is still pending.
According to the officials, among the four other absconding killers, Khandaker Rashid is currently staying in Pakistan, Shariful Haq Dalim is either in Pakistan or Zimbabwe, Abdul Majid is in Senegal, and AM Rashed Chowdhury is in the United States.
The meeting of the task force was attended, among others, by law minister Anisul Huq, foreign minister Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali and home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal.
When asked, law minister Anisul Huq told Prothom Alo that their properties will be confiscated through legal means. “If any such property is given to their relatives, they will also be seized and confiscated.”
According to sources in the home ministry, local administrations have been instructed to investigate and report on banks where the murderers’ assets might be hidden.
The foreign ministry said that they are in touch with Canada and the USA to bring back the killers hiding there.
For the murder of Bangabandhu, killers Syed Faruk Rahman, Mohiuddin Ahmed, Bazlul Huda, AKM Mohiuddin Ahmed and Sultan Shahriar Rashid Khan were hanged on 27 January 2010.
