Communications Minister Obaidul Quader on Wednesday said the government will seek assistance from the army for the construction of the Padma Bridge.
The minister was addressing a function at Hamdard University (proposed) maidan at Sonargaon near Meghna Bridge after inaugurating the second phase repair work on Meghna and Gumti bridges.
Chief of Army Staff General Iqbal Karim Bhuiyan, officials of the army, Communications Ministry, Roads and Highway department and others were present.
“Construction works on the second Meghna, the second Gumti and the second Kanchpur bridges on Dhaka-Chittagong highway will begin in October this year with financial assistance from Japan. A credit agreement worth Tk 9000 crore has already been signed with JICA for the construction of the three bridges,” the minister told the function.
Criticising the opposition for their frequent hartal calls, the minister said, “Shutdowns impede the country’s development and progress and tarnishes the country’s image abroad.”
Bangladesh Army on June 10 last year began the repair and rehabilitation works on the Maghna and Gumti bridges involving Tk 437 crore.
Engineers hoped the two bridges will remain fit for the next 10 years following completion of the repair works.
