BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Friday said the government is now taking revenge on people by killing and repressing them as they did not vote it in the January 5 parliamentary elections.
“’The government is sending police, plainclothes police and Rab to people’s door and repressing and harassing innocent people by filing false cases,’’ he said while addressing a public rally at Dholarhat Bazar in Sadar upazila of the district around 11:30am.
Mirza Fakhrul claimed the BNP-led 19-party alliance is a non-communal platform, and said there is no room for communalism in their alliance.
He accused the ruling Awami League of doing politics capitalising on communalism. “They’ve destroyed the country’s communal harmony.”
The BNP spokesperson said people from all walks of life got united to stop the ‘so-called’ January 5 election but Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina did not pay heed to the people’s desire.
Fakhrul also said the ruling party stigmatised the nation by holding the unacceptable and ‘voter-less’ election in the name of protecting the constitution.
He said only 12 political parties out of 42 registered ones of the country took part in the election where the voter turnout was around ‘3-5 percent’.
The BNP leader posed a question saying, “Is the constitution a religious book which can’t be changed? Actually, Awami League is a terrorist party and it wants to hang onto power by resorting to terrorism.
Earlier, Fakhrul exchanged views with its party leaders at the district party office.
Addressing the views-exchange meeting, the BNP acting secretary general said no one at home and abroad legitimised the current regime formed through ‘lopsided farcical’ polls.
He alleged that some clowns led by Jatiya Party chairman HM Ershad and his wife Rawshan Ershad are acting like jokers in parliament.
Referring to Ershad’s comments before the January 5 polls that people would spite him if he joined the elections, Fakhrul said the Jatiya Party chief took part in the election resorting to a ploy. “People now call him Thutu Baba (father of spite).
In a bid to rejuvenate the party leaders and activists at his home district, the BNP leader said, “Work for the country with courage. All autocrats and fascist regimes were always defeated. This government also cannot prolong its power by resorting to repressive acts.”
He urged the BNP leaders and activists to continue their movement with a fresh vigor to force the current ‘illegal’ regime to hold a fair and inclusive election under a non-party administration.
