‘Govt pushing for uncertainty’

“The country is heading towards uncertainty because of the government’s stubbornness and desire to cling on to power,” acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said on Tuesday.

His statement followed the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s rejection of the opposition demand for reinstatement of caretaker administration provision in the Constitution.

Hasina told a press conference at Ganabhaban on Sunday: “(We) amended the Constitution with people’s mandate. The election will be in line with the Constitution. We’ll not move an inch.”

A day after her statement, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia demanded that the government restore the caretaker government system through a constitutional amendment.

Speaking at a discussion, Fakhrul said the government was not accepting the demand as they fear that they would be ‘miles away from power’ if there was a fair election.

He said: “As our leader already said, the election has to be held in time after the expiry of the (current) Parliament under a non-party government.

“Otherwise, the people will frustrate the government’s plans to cling on to power through tougher movements.”

He compared the situation of the country with that during former military ruler HM Ershad’s regime.

The discussion was organised at the National Press Club marking the death anniversary of BNP Secretary General Abdus Salam Talukder.
