Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson Khaleda Zia on Monday claimed that the government ‘grabbing power forcibly’ had launched an ‘attack’ to demolish all the organs of the state.
Khaleda, who is now in London, came up with the remark in a message issued on the occasion of ‘Shahid Jehad Dibos’ today.
Nazir Uddin Jehad, an activist of BNP-backed student wing Chhatra Dal, had laid down his life in the anti-autocratic movement against military ruler HM Ershad on October 10 in 1990.
Khaleda said Jehad was shot dead by police during the anti-autocratic mass movement in 1990.
She claimed that mass uprising took place in that year because of his sacrifice and autocratic Ershad had stepped down.
The BNP chief said Jehad had sacrificed his life to restore democracy and set it on firm footing.
Presently ‘stabbed’ democracy was screaming, Khaleda said in the message signed by BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi.
She said people’s freedom of speech and independence were being snatched away.
‘We have to take part in more courageous struggle to protect the democratic institutions and flourishing of democracy,’ Khaleda said.
She said they would be able to thwart conspiracy of local and foreign evil forces, protect independence and sovereignty and uphold democracy being inspired by the sacrifice of Jehad.
