BNP standing committee member Tariqul Islam on Friday accused the government of indulging various conspiracies to destroy democracy after having failed to properly govern the country.
“The government has indulged in conspiracies to destroy our hard-earned democracy and keeps on telling lies to undermine opposition leaders, including Ziaur Rahman’s family,” he said.
Tariqul was addressing a rally prior to bringing out a procession in the capital.
Jatiyatabadi Samajik Sangskritik Sangstha (Jasas) organised rally in front of BNP central office at Nayapaltan marking the 48th birthday of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia’s son and party senior vice-chairman Tarique Rahman.
Tariqul warned that the opposition will oust the government through a mass upsurge unless it agrees to hold the next general election under a non-party caretaker government.
Terming Tarique Rahman a ‘leader of the masses’, the BNP leader said: “The government will never succeed in its plot to eliminate him from politics.”
After the rally, BNP leaders and workers carrying banners, festoons and Tarique’s portraits took out the procession from Bijoynagar crossing. The procession later ended in front of the Jatiya Press Club.
Swechchasebak Dal president Habibun Nabi Khan Sohel and Jasas general secretary Monir Khan, among others, took part in the procession.
