Worried at the ‘growing repressive acts by the government’, opposition BNP on Saturday deplored the regime and threatened to give a ‘befitting reply’ in time.
“BNP is not a hapless and shelter-less party. Every due is on our record. We’ll repay to everything properly in time,” warned BNP joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi.
He issued the threat at a press briefing at BNP’s Nayapaltan central office.
Rizvi said the government attacked their pre-declared rallies at different parts of the country and oppressed the opposition leaders and activists.
He claimed that over 150 opposition activists were injured in the attacks and over 55 arrested allover the country.
The BNP-lead 18-party alliance announced the demonstration programme in all district towns, upazila and thana headquarters for Saturday demanding the release of its top leaders, including BNP standing committee members Barrister Moudud Ahmed, MK Anwar and Rafiqul Islam Miah.
Rizvi said the government during its last five years tenure, tortured many opposition leaders and activists, and intimidated them taking them on police remand.
He said the government being alienated from people is going ahead with its plan for a unilateral election depending on terrorists and guns.
Rizvi, also the BNP office secretary, said the government is resorting to various acts of sabotage as it has got unnerved seeing people’s resounding support to the opposition’s demand.
He accused a section of media of ‘falsely’ imposing blame on the opposition for hartal violence. “Some media is trying to bypass the government’s involvement in hartal violence like crude bomb explosions and torching vehicles to other direction. They’re also skipping the news on the killing of opposition activists in police firing. We would like to ask the mass media to take lessons from history.”
Asked about their next course of action, the BNP leader said they are on a movement and it will continue until their demand for arranging the next polls under a non-party government is met.
