GOVT APPEAL IN JAIL KILLING CASE Verdict on Apr 30

Jail killing-3

The Supreme Court will give its verdict on April 30 regarding the government’s appeal against the acquittal of six former army officers in the jail killing case.

The six-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Md Muzammel Hossain fixed the date after concluding hearing on the appeal.

During the hearing, Attorney General Mahbubey Alam and Principal State Counsel Anisul Huq prayed to the apex court to give highest punishment to the accused of the case.

While Abdullah Al Mamun, a counsel for Dafadar (dismissed) Marfat Ali Shah and Dafadar (dismissed) Abdul Hashem Mridha, prayed for upholding the HC verdict which acquitted his clients from the charges.

The SC started hearing on the appeal filed on January 15 and held the hearing around 10 working days so far.

The government filed the appeal with the apex court challenging the HC verdict in the case filed for killing four national leaders — Syed Nazrul Islam, Tajuddin Ahmad, AHM Quamruzzaman and Captain Mansur Ali — inside the Dhaka Central Jail on November 3, 1975.

In 2004, the Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court of Dhaka sentenced to death Risalder (retd) Muslemuddin, Dafadar (dismissed) Marfat Ali Shah and Dafadar (dismissed) Abdul Hashem Mridha.

On August 28, 2008, the HC upheld the capital punishment of Muslemuddin and acquitted Marfat and Hashem. It also acquitted Farooq, Shahriar, Mohiuddin and Bazlul Huda.

On January 27, 2010, Farooq, Shahriar, Mohiuddin and Bazlul Huda were executed in the Bangabandhu assassination case.
