Customs officials at Hazrat Sgahjalal International Airport recovered 25 kgs of gold worth about TK 9 crore from a Biman flight on Saturday noon.

Tipped off that a large consignment of gold was being smuggled into the country by a Bimam flight from Kuwait, customs officials strengthened their vigilance just after an aircraft of Biman (Flight no-BG-044) from Kuwait landed at the airport around 1:15 pm, sources at the airport said.

Sensing their strict vigilance activities, the gold smugglers came out from the flight without carrying the gold consignment, they said.

“We then conducted a search in the flight and detected the presence of gold bars from under the seat No 16,” said Assistant Commissioner of Airport Customs Sheikh Gulam Mostafa Kamal.

“There’re a total of 217 gold bars, each weighing 10 tolas. The present market values of the smuggled gold bars is Tk8,89,67,462,” he said.
