Gibson: Active opposition urgent for democracy

It is our continuous effort to deepen the relationship between both the countries, says Gibson

British High commissioner Robert Gibson has said an active opposition is very important in strengthening democracy.

He made the remark after a meeting with Sylhet city mayor Ariful Haq Chowdhury at the city corporation office on Monday afternoon.

He said the British government was working on to help establish democratic accountability in Bangladesh.

“It is our continuous effort to deepen the relationship between both the countries,” said Gibson.

He further said they expected a participatory election, however, that didn’t happen.

“Now there needs an active opposition and a free media,” he said.
