The health condition of war crimes convict and also the former chief of the Jamaat-e-Islami, Ghulam Azam, has deteriorated further, said doctors.

Abdul Majid Vuiyan, director of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) confirmed the Dhaka Tribune about the current health condition of the 92-years-old Jamaat guru.

However, he said the condition of the Jamaat leader was not critical as he was “able to breathe without any extra help.”

Earlier on October 9, he was taken to the cardiac intensive care unit (ICU) from the prison cell of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) with kidney complications.

A three-member medical board was formed the next day headed by Prof Dr ABM Abdullah, dean of medicine faculty, for his treatment.

Doctors said he has been suffering from multiple old-age diseases.

The war criminal was sentenced to 90-year imprisonment on July 15 last year for the crimes against humanity he had committed during the 1971 Liberation War.
