Five bodies have been recovered, including that of a 13-year old boy, after an overcrowded trawler sank in the river Paira at Barguna’s Taltoli with about 200 people onboard, police say.
Two others remain unaccounted for since the accident on Friday noon at the point of the river opening out to the Bay of Bengal.
The others were rescued, Tatoli Police Station OC Babul Akter said.
Police identified the victims as 60-year-old Joynal Abedin, Soyjuddin Choukidar, 55, Amir Ali, 42, Yusuf Majhi, 45, and Abu Nayeem, 13.
Those missing are yet to be identified.
One of the passengers said all of them were going to Bamna Upazila’s Cholabhanga Darbar Sharif to attend a three-day religious sermon beginning Friday.
The vessel’s engine abruptly shut down when it reached the confluence of the Bay, triggering panic among its passengers.
As waves were pounding the trawler, its passengers tried to balance it by moving to both sides, bdnews24.com correspondent said.
But it caused the vessel to shake more and finally capsize.
Locals rescued most of the people as the accident took place near the shore, he added.
