Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has called for a greater emphasis on production, processing, and marketing of fishes.

She stressed on pisciculture to meet the national demand for protein.

“We have to increase fish production for our socio-economic growth,” Hasina said on Tuesday while inaugurating ‘National Fisheries Week 2013’ in Dhaka.

The Prime Minister believed fish could become Bangladesh’s main export item if the country could ensure a sustainable use of its aquatic resources and wetlands.

She said the fisheries sector met 60 percent of the national demand for protein and with proper management, this sector can be developed as an industry.

This year, 20 persons and institutions were awarded for their contribution in the pisciculture. Five of them were given gold medals and Tk 50,000 each. The rest were awarded bronze medals and Tk 30,000 each.

The Prime Minister reminded her audience of her government’s historic “maritime boundary victory” over Myanmar and hoped to settle similar disputes with India.

She said her government would be able to ensure Bangladesh’s rights over its sea boundary if people voted it to power in the forthcoming general election.
