The first ever Bangladeshi national trained in the Indian Military Academy has been commissioned into Bangladesh Army.
Mohammed Abir Hassan received his training at the IMA in Dehradun of Indian state of Uttarakhand, the Indian media reported.
The Times of India reported that Mohammed Abir Hassan, 23, is one of the 29 officer cadets from 12 friendly countries to have graduated from the Dehradun institution on Saturday.
‘My dream came true today. What has added to my joy is that I’m also the first in my family to become an army officer. If alive, my grandfather would have been proud of me,’ Abir told the Times of India.
No statement from the Bangladeshi Inter-Services Public Relations division was available on this.
Retired Major General Md Shahidul Haque, former defence attaché at the Bangladesh embassy in Myanmar and former ambassador to Libya, told New Age that this was the first such commissioning in the history of Bangladesh.
He said that so far, Bangladesh military officers have been commissioned from the military academies in the United Kingdoms, United States, Pakistan, Malaysia and Germany, among others.
The Times of India also reported that the defence attaché at the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi, Brigadier Mohammed Hafiz-Ur-Rehman, was present at the graduation ceremony and termed it ‘a matter of immense pride for our country’.
‘The fact that he has become the first from Bangladesh to graduate from the IMA would prove to be another step in strengthening our friendly ties with India. We’re hopeful that there will be more cadets in future,’ he said.
