Bangladesh Nationalist Party has smelt a rat at finance minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith’s remarks that the constitution would be amended repeatedly to restore parliament’s power to impeach Supreme Court judges for ‘incapacity’ and ‘misconduct’.
BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi at a news briefing at the central office on Saturday said the finance minister’s statement represents the statement of the government.
Rizvi said the statement bore an ‘ominous sign’ when the condition of democracy in the country is ‘nearly dead’.
On Friday, finance minister Muhith, while inspecting the proposed site of Sylhet Medical University in the city, said, ‘We will pass the amendment in parliament once again. And it will be done repeatedly if necessary to see how far the judiciary can go.’
Rizvi said the statement over the verdict of court is tantamount to ‘contempt’ of court.
About the Awami League general secretary’s remarks made on Friday that top to bottom of BNP should resign for failing to forge movement, Rizvi said now they (AL leaders) have lost their common sense.
He said the ministers and lawmakers were making ‘imbalanced’ (prolap) statements following scrapping of 16th constitutional amendment that had empowered parliament to remove judges.
