The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) on Sunday urged the government to fill up the vacant posts at the Appellate Division to resolve long-pending cases in the interest of justice seekers.
Addressing a press conference, SCBA President Khandker Mahbub Hossain came up with the demand.
Pointing finger at the government, he said it has stopped appointment with a mala fide intention which is not comprehensible to the lawyer community.
“It’s not difficult to fill up the three vacant posts at the Appellate Division if the government desires so and increase more benches for quick disposal of long-pending cases,” the SCBA President observed.
At present, he said, 15,000 cases are pending with the Appellate Division for disposal while 300,000 cases with the High Court Division.
“What’s the reason behind the reluctant stance of the government over the new appointment to the Appellate Division by elevating the competent judges available at the High Court Division?” said Khandker Mahbub.
The apex court bar leader alleged that the government has a motive behind the inordinate delay of elevating eligible senior HC judges so that it can appoint junior HC judges of its choice after retirement of the senior ones.
SCBA secretary barrister Mahbub Uddin Khokon and former SCBA secretary barrister Badruddoza Badal were, among others, present at the press conference.
