The trial of Felani murder case would help reduce border killings in the future, hoped Home Minister Muhiuddin Khan Alamgir Tuesday.
“It (the murder) was a regrettable incident. We are working to reach a peaceful resolution in this matter by cooperation with India,” the minister said while talking to journalists during a workshop at Pan Pacific Sonargaon Hotel in the capital.
Muhiuddin made the comment as the Felani murder trial is set to begin at the General Security Force Court in the 181 BSF battalion headquarters in Coochbehar district of West Bengal on Tuesday.
The trial process began in the face of the continued efforts by the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), said a PID handout earlier.
Fifteen-year-old Bangladeshi girl Felani was shot dead by the members of Indian Border Security Force (BSF) on January 7, 2011 when she along with her father Nurul Islam was were entering Bangladesh crossing the barbed wire fences at Anantapur border point in Phulbari upazila of Kurigram.
“We hope appropriate verdict would be pronounced during the trial,” the minister said on Tuesday.
Bangladesh Coast Guard and International Maritime Rescue Federation jointly organised the workshop.
During the trial, the court will receive statements of Felani’s father and her maternal uncle Abdul Hanif on August 19.
Lt Col Ziaul Haque Khaled, commander of 45-Border Guard Bangladesh battalion in Kurigram, and Abraham Lincoln, Kurigram public prosecutor, will accompany them.
