The inspector general of police, AKM Shahidul Hoque, on Thursday claimed poet, writer and researcher Farhad Mazhar was not abducted rather he staged the incident to embarrass the government.
He came out of his house to embarrass the government and misappropriate an amount of money, the police chief said at a press briefing on law and order situation at police headquarters in Dhaka.
During the briefing, the IGP gave the details of what happened to Farhad Mazhar.
The police chief, however, could not accurately say in which circumstance Farhad reached Khulna.
‘We presume that he went to Khulna by bus,’ he said.
‘As kidnappers usually use microbus in such incident, we put importance to look for the microbus.’
Farhad Mazhar was allegedly abducted from Dhaka on July 3 morning and found on a bus in Jessore on that night.
Shahidul Hoque said Farhad Mazhar called his family 10 times from 5:30am to 7:00pm (on July 3).
He also called another (acquainted) woman six times using another mobile number, the IGP added.
