The Election Commission set January 30 for DSCC and DNCC
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has expressed doubt that the Dhaka city corporation elections will be fair.
“There is a slim chance of the city corporation elections being fair, but BNP is taking part in it because it believes in democracy,” Fakhrul said on Wednesday.
He made the statement while speaking to the media after placing wreaths at party founder Ziaur Rahman’s grave at Chandrima Udyan in the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar area in Dhaka.
“No election under the current Election Commission can be free and fair. The commission and the government do not reflect the decisions of people. Still, we do take part in elections, because of our belief in democracy,” he said.
Claiming that no election is possible without the term of caretaker government, he said the decision of people will not be reflected via votes cast through the Electronic Voting Machine [EVM].
BNP chairperson’s adviser Aman Ullah Aman, party Vice Chairman Shamsuzzaman Dudu, and other leaders from Jubo Dal and Chhatra Dal, were also present there.
The Election Commission (EC) has set January 30 for the election of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) and Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC).
Aspirants will have to submit their nomination papers to the EC by December 31. The papers will be scrutinized on January 2, while the last date of candidature withdrawal is January 9.
Voters will elect mayors and councilors by casting their votes using EVM in all centres on the day of the election.
