Charges were pressed on Wednesday against BNP leaders Barrister Moudud Ahmed, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and others in connection with the city’s March 2 violence.
Police submitted charge sheets against the opposition leaders and activists in three cases -– two filed with Paltan Police Station and the other with Shajahanpur Police Station — before the court of Metropolitan Magistrate Shahriar Mahmud Adnan.
A charge-sheet was submitted against 26 BNP men, including its acting secretary general Fakhrul, standing committee members Moudud and Gayeshwar, party leaders Amanullah Aman, Abdullah Al Noman and Moazzem Hossain Alal, in a case filed with the Paltan Police Station under the Speedy Trial Act.
Another charge-sheet was placed against 23 opposition men, including Fakhrul, Moudud, Mirza Abbas, Noman and Alal, in the another case filed with Shajahanpur police station under the Explosive Substance Act.
The court fixed April 7 for hearing the charge acceptance in the two cases.
In the other case filed with the Paltan police under the Explosive Substance Act, police pressed charges against 44 BNP leaders and activists, including Moudud, Gayeshwar, Abbas, Aman and Alal.
The court will decide on April 3 as to whether it would accept the charge sheet in the case.
Five cases were filed in connection with vandalising and torching of vehicles from a BNP procession in the city’s Shantinagar and Malibagh areas on March 2.
Of the cases, two each were filed with Paltan and Ramna police stations while the other with Shajahanpur police station.
