The Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court on Wednesday granted bail to main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and its standing committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury in a case filed over an attack on the chief justice’s residence on October 28 last year.
Judge Faisal Atiq Bin Kader passed the order after hearing their bail petition in the case filed with the Ramna police station on charges of vandalism and attack on the chief justice’s residence.
There is no legal bar on their release following this bail order, as they have been granted bail in all other cases filed against them,’ said Syed Jainul Abedin Mesbah, one of the defence lawyers.
Defence lawyers submitted a bail petition to the court on February 6 after a Dhaka metropolitan magistrate court rejected their bail petition in the case.
Earlier, Fakhrul and Khasru’s bail was rejected a total of four times by the High Court and lower courts on different occasions.
At least 11 cases were filed against Fakhrul, while 10 cases were filed against Khasru with Paltan and Ramna police stations over clashes and vandalism during the BNP’s October 28 grand rally in Dhaka.
The cases were filed on various charges, including the killing of a police constable, vandalising vehicles, snatching a police weapon, damaging properties, assaulting police personnel, and preventing them from discharging their duties.
Fakhrul was arrested on October 29 while Khasru was arrested on November 3 from their respective houses in connection with the case filed over an attack on the chief justice’s residence.
