The High Court on Thursday granted anticipatory bail for six months to BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir in a case filed for torching a bus.
An HC bench comprising Justice M Rezaul Hasan and Justice Muhammad Khurshid Alam Sarker passed the order following a bail petition filed by the BNP leader.
The court also issued a rule upon the government to explain as to why he should not be granted permanent bail in the case field under the Anti-terrorism Act.
The Inspector General of Police, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner and others concerned have been made respondents to the rule.
On January 3 this year, miscreants hurled a petrol bomb at a Gulistan-bound bus from Abdullahpur in Paribagh of the city during the blockade programme of the BNP-led 18-party alliance, leaving its passengers Shahina and Farid and driver Babul Hawlader injured with burns.
Later, Shahina and Farid succumbed to their injuries.
After the Supreme Court scrapped the High Court bail in the case, Fakhrul sought bail with the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate of Dhaka on March 16. However, the court sent him to jail rejecting his bail petition.
Later, the BNP acting secretary general filed the bail pleas with the High Court.
Also on Thursday, a trial court of Dhaka granted bail to Fakhrul in a police constable killing case, but denied his bail pleas in two other cases.
