Fakhrul for tougher agitation

He made the appeal at a discussion held by the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal on Wednesday to mark the 49th birthday of BNP Senior Vice Chairman Tarique Rahman.

Fakhrul asked the student leaders to step up the ongoing movement to resolve political crisis rather than celebrating Tarique’s birthday by cutting cakes.

“Vandalising one or two cars is not enough for a movement. Thousands of Chhatra Dal leaders and activists will have to come out on the streets,” he said.

Wishing Tarique a long life, Fakhrul said if the party activists could free the democracy from the “confinement” through their agitation, it would be a great birthday gift to him.

Tarique Rahman, the eldest son of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, was born in Bogra in 1965.

Arrested in March 2007, Tarique is now staying in London after securing bail from the Supreme Court.

Fakhrul reiterated his party’s stance on the all-party polls-time cabinet.

“The people want a free and fair election. The Opposition will not take part in the election unless it is held under a non-party government with a re-structured cabinet.”

The ‘staged election’ will not be acceptable to foreign countries also, he said.

Fakhrul demanded unconditional release of the arrested BNP leaders.
