The main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said on Sunday that while he does not support the politics of the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islamai, he finds its strategy highly scientific.

‘I do not support the politics of Jamaat-e-Islami. But their political strategy is highly scientific, just like that of the Communist Party,’ Fakhrul said while speaking at a discussion at the National Press Club.

The Ziaur Rahman Foundation organised the discussion to mark the 43rd death anniversary of BNP founder Ziaur Rahman.

‘They [Jamaat] have a study cell in their student wing. Each of them has to study. They publish books and magazines themselves. Without the pursuit of knowledge, you cannot succeed,’ Fakhrul said.

Calling the current government plunderers, the BNP leader said that when people open newspapers, it’s just loot and more loot.

‘They [Awami League] are plundering the country and smuggling it abroad. As soon as they lose power, they will flee abroad,’ he observed.

He said that those in high positions in the state are looting, while lawmakers are involved in smuggling, and big shots in the stock market are looting people’s investments.

‘Some are involved in these activities under the guise of dervish, some as monks. No accountability, no worries. Only one thought—stay in power,’ he said.

Fakhrul accused the government of sinking future generations in debt, noting Tk 1.55 lakh per capita debt.

He commented that no person with a sound mind and patriotism could undertake the kind of loans being taken under various conditions.

He said that to stand tall against all odds, one must understand Ziaur Rahman.

‘It is not enough to do politics with just slogans. One must do it with knowledge. To understand Ziaur Rahman, one must delve deep into his work,’ he said.

‘Nowadays, it is not possible to speak about Ziaur Rahman. If you tell the truth, you are charged with sedition,’ he added.

ZRF executive director Farhad Dalim presided over the meeting where former Dhaka University political science professor Nurul Amin Bapari and Bangladesh Sammilita Peshajibi Parishad member secretary Quader Gani Chowdhury spoke, among others.
