A Dhaka metropolitan magistrate court on Thursday rejected the bail petition of Bangladesh Nationalist Party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir in the case filed for the attack on the residence of the chief justice during the BNP rally in Dhaka on October 28, 2023.

Two other Dhaka metropolitan magistrate courts on the day showed BNP standing committee member Mirza Abbas arrested in nine cases filed for political violence centring the October 28 BNP rally.

Metropolitan magistrate Farzana Shakila Sumu rejected Fakhrul’s bail petition after hearing the petition moved by his lawyer, Zoynal Abedin Mesbah.

Fakhrul is still in jail even after obtaining bail in all other cases filed against him as he has been denied bail in the chief justice’s residence attack case on four occasions by the High Court and metropolitan magistrate courts since his arrest on November 29, 2023.

The 76-year-old BNP leader has been in jail since October 29, 2023, when he was picked up by the Detective Branch of the police from his Gulshan house in the case filed with the Paltan model police station for an attack on the residence of the chief justice.

Before October 28, Fakhrul was named in 102 cases in which he obtained bail.

Two other magistrate courts on Thursday accepted petitions to show Mirza Abbas arrested in nine cases filed with Paltan and Ramna model police stations for violence centring the October 28 BNP rally.

The cases were filed on charges of killing a police constable, vandalising vehicles, snatching a police weapon, damaging properties, assaulting police people, and preventing them from discharging their duties.

Of the cases, five were filed with the Paltan model police station and four with the Ramna model police station, said his lawyer, Mohi Uddin Chowdhury.

On January 21, the High Court ordered an analogous hearing and disposal of the bail petitions of Abbas in connection with the nine cases after hearing a writ petition.

The defence lawyer on January 10 filed petitions seeking bail for the BNP leader and the magistrate court refused to deal with the nine petitions at a time.

Abbas was arrested on October 31, 2023 at Shahidbagh in a case filed with the Shahjahanpur police station.
