The High Court on Sunday issued a rule upon the government to explain in two weeks its steps taken to stop extortion in the transport sector.
An HC bench of Justice Quazi Reza-Ul Haque and Justice ABM Altaf Hossain in a suo moto rule also asked the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to submit a report in 72 hours on the steps taken by the police to control extortion across the country.
The court also asked the government to explain as to why it should not be directed to take legal actions against those involved in extortion in transporting goods.
Apart from the IGP, the Home Secretary, and Railway police were made respondent to the rule.
The court issued the rule following a report published in the daily Prothom Alo on Saturday (July 27) headlined ‘Bogra thake Chattagram, Pothe, Pothe Chandabaji’ (Bogra to Chittagong, extortion on the roads).
