The High Court Wednesday issued a rule upon the government to explain in two weeks why its action to hinder printing of the daily Amar Desh at an alternative press should not be declared illegal.
The court came up with the order following a writ petition filed by Firoza Mahmud, managing director of Amar Desh Publications Ltd.
In the petition, the petitioner prayed to the court to direct the government to permit the Amar Desh authority to print the newspaper at Al-Falah Printing and Press Ltd of the Daily Sangram at Boro Moghbazar.
Firoza, filed the petition in April saying that law enforcers obstructed printing of the Amar Desh at the press on April 12 and 13.
The petitioner also said law enforcers on April 11 shut down the Amar Desh Printing and Press.
They arrested binders of the Amar Desh on April 13 from the Al-Falah Printing and Press area, she added.
The petitioner further said they have taken permission from the district magistrate of Dhaka for publishing the Amar Desh newspaper from Al-Falah Press Ltd.
“The government had obstructed the printing of the Amar Desh illegally,” the petition added.
The High Court bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice ABM Altaf Hossain passed the rule on Wednesday.
Home secretary, information secretary, inspector general of police, district magistrate of Dhaka, assistance district magistrate (printing), officers in charge of Ramna and Tejgaon police stations have been made respondent to the rule.
