BNP standing committee member Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain on Wednesday urged the Speaker to suggest the ruling Awami League instead of BNP for sitting in talks with the agenda of non-party government to resolve the ongoing political crisis.

“Ask the government, not the opposition, to sit in a dialogue with a specific agenda on non-party polls-time government to overcome the ongoing political crisis,” he said.

Reacting to a call of Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury to the opposition to resolve the political stalemate through discussions in parliament, Mosharraf said as the ruling party has the majority in the House they will outright reject any proposal if the opposition places in this regard.

Mosharraf was addressing a programme at the National Press Club arranged by Shikhyak Karmachari Oikya Jote.

Earlier in the day, Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury hoped that the opposition will join Parliament and take part in discussions on any issue ‘in light of the Constitution and as per Parliament’s rules of procedure’.

She also said discussions can be held on any issue and there is scope for removal of any type of differences in Parliament through talks.

Reacting to the remark of the Speaker, Mosharraf said, “The solution to the problem won’t come through joining Parliament as it depends on the good will of the government.”

“Don’t offer dialogue only to mislead people. They government should equivocally say the election will be held under a under the non-partisan government. The dialogue can be held to determine who will be the chief of the election-time government,” he added.

He also called upon the government to take this initiative before the expiry of the tenure of the ninth parliament.

Former Pro-VC of Dhaka University AFM Yousuf Haider and Doctors’ Association of Bangladesh (DAB) secretary general ZM Jahid Hossain, among others, addressed the function.
