A Dhaka court on Wednesday ordered Stamford University vice-chancellor MA Hannan Firoz to be quizzed for six days for his alleged connection with an attack on ruling Awami League leader Enamul Haque Shamim, also an owner of the university.
Earlier, Hannan Firoz, also incumbent chairman of the university’s Trustee Board, was held from his Dhanmondi residence in Dhaka in the early hours of Wednesday.
Metropolitan magistrate Hasibul Haque granted six days for interrogating Hannan Firoz against the ten days of interrogation sought by Detective Branch inspector Shamsuddin Saleh Ahmed Chowdhury, also investigation officer (IO) of the case.
On June 19, Enamul Haque Shamim, a member of the Awami League’s working committee and former Bangladesh Chhatra League president, came under the gun attack by a group of miscreants near Stamford University at Dhanmondi.
The driver of Enamul Haque’s car, Kamal Hossain, also a witness, said he was taking Enamul Haque from his 10/A Dhanmondi residence to Stamford University on June 19. As soon as they reached the 9/A crossing near Ibne Sina Diagnostic Centre at about 9:30am, three persons without helmet riding a motorcycle fired shots targeting Enamul Haque’s head. He, however, managed to lower his head but got shot in hand. The miscreants drove away.
On July 8, members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and DB arrested seven suspects from Dhaka, Rajbari and Mymensingh.
After interrogating the arrested, RAB said Enamul was attempted to be killed over a dispute about the ownership of Stamford University.
