Jatiya Party Chairman Hussein Muhammad Ershad has dismissed the news of his resignation as ‘mere rumour’ even as he admits being ‘dissatisfied’ over the functioning of his party.
“Why should I resign, I am the party’s supreme authority,” he told bdnews24.com on Monday.
“… I’m however a bit dissatisfied. But I have no plan to resign at this moment,” added the former military strongman.
When asked about the cause(s) of his dissatisfaction, Ershad shot back: “Why should I tell you?”
As per media reports, the former dictator has been under pressure for taking part in the 10th parliamentary elections after the party’s announcement of boycotting the elections.
The stand of the Jatiya Party to play the dual role in parliament also came in for widespread criticism.
A media report published on Monday quoted Ershad’s driver as saying he sent his resignation letter to Jatiya Party Secretary General Ziauddin Ahmed Bablu.
Ershad said: “To whom should I submit the resignation letter? Everything has a system.”
When asked what the process should be if he decides to resign, Ershad said, “For that the presidium committee must be convened and I can resign only after discussions there.”
When contacted, Ziauddin Ahmed Bablu, however, denied receiving any such letter and termed such news as “baseless and untrue”.
“Had any such development taken place, I myself would have informed you.”
Bablu was made the party’s secretary general within three months of general elections. He replaced ABM Ruhul Amin Howlader after months of speculations.
Bablu is known to be close to Ershad’s wife Raushan Ershad who is the Leader of the Opposition.
He is also known to have close ties with the ruling Awami League.
Recently several newspapers published reports that the Jatiya Party was visibly divided in two camps with one group being loyal to Raushan and another to her husband – a claim that both the husband and wife refuted.
