Demanding fresh elections under a non-party administration, BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Sunday said the government’s efforts to hold a stage-managed election has failed.

In a statement, Fakhrul said, “The voters not only rejected this farcical election but also foiled the government’s all efforts to hold unilateral polls.”

Claiming that the government has failed to make the elections acceptable to people with the help of its puppet Election Commission and the administration, the BNP spokesperson said, “It has turned into a tragedy for the ruling party.”

He demanded the government immediately quit and hold the national election under a non-party caretaker government. “The government has no moral right to stay in office any more.”

On behalf of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia and senior vice chairman Tarique Rahman, Fakhrul thanked the country’s people for boycotting the elections responding to their calls.

He prayed for salvation of the departed souls of those killed in election violence and conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family members.

The BNP leader said the stage-managed elections in 147 constituencies became boomerang for the government as people rejected them with hatred by not going to the polling stations.  “There’re many centers where voter turnout is zero while in most centers voter turnout is only 1-5 percent.”

He termed false the remarks of senior AL leader Tofail Ahmed that people cast votes ignoring opposition’s boycott call.

The BNP spokesman said many rebel candidates of the ruling party and candidates of Jatiya Party, JSD and independent ones stayed away from the polls due to vote rigging and government-sponsored terrorism.
