The joy of Eid-ul-Fitr has taken over Bangladesh as the country is celebrating the largest festival of Muslims on Saturday after the end of the Ramadan month of fasting.
It was all but certain that Bangladesh will be celebrating the Eid on Saturday as the festival usually falls on the following day of Eid in Saudi Arabia, and the Gulf kingdom was commemorating it on Friday.
The National Moon-Sighting Committee’s confirmation of the sighting of the crescent for the month of Shawwal on the Islamic calendar in the evening added to the joy of the holidaymakers.
More than a hundred villages across Bangladesh, however, celebrated Eid on Friday in keeping with a tradition of commemorating all religious festivals with Saudi Arabia.
President Md Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina have greeted the people on the occasion and prayed for continued peace, progress and prosperity of the country and the Muslim world.
The president called for letting the teachings of the Eid-ul-Fitr spread among all people and helping build a prosperous Bangladesh.
Hasina hoped that the practice of self-purification, restraint, amity and harmony of the Muslims in personal, family, social and state lives will spread everywhere.

President Hamid along with Supreme Court judges, ministers, MPs, politicians and people from all walks of life are going to join the main Eid congregation at the National Eidgah Ground at 8:30am.
This will be shifted to the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque at 9am in case of bad weather.
Mosques and other congregation grounds across the country are also ready for the Eid prayers, with the largest gathering expected at Sholakia in Kishoreganj.
After the prayers, President Hamid will exchange Eid greetings with ministers, MPs, politicians, diplomats, professionals, and leaders of religious communities at the Bangabhaban from 10am.
Hasina will exchange Eid greetings with the people at the Ganabhaban from 9:30am and with judges and diplomats from 11am.
BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia will not be able to do it this time as she is in jail for corruption.
Senior BNP leaders have filed an application to see her on the Eid day at the old jailhouse on Naimuddin Road in Dhaka.
On the occasion of the Eid, special menus will be served at state-run hospitals, children’s homes, shelters, safe homes and jails.
Bangladesh Betar, Bangladesh Television and private TV and radio stations are broadcasting special programmes. The newspapers are also bringing out special supplements on Saturday.
