Transport movement on the Dhaka-Aricha highway has returned to normalcy as garment workers in Savar withdrew their barricade after factory authorities assured them of paying arrears and Eid bonus by Wednesday.
The protesting workers left the highway immediately after the announcement by the AKH Group authorities around 3:30pm, said Abdus Sattar, an assistant deputy director of Ashulia Industrial Police.
The factory authorities also closed the units declaring Tuesday a holiday, the police official told our correspondent in Savar.
Around 1,000 workers of the garments started demonstrations in front of the factories at Hemayetpur blocking a lane of the highway around 2:30pm.
On information, police rushed to the spot and urged the agitators to settle the issue through a negotiation with the factory authorities, Sattar said.
Additional forces of police have been deployed in the area to avert any untoward situation.
Tuesday is the last date for clearing the salary and Eid bonus to the workers as the government on July 21 asked the readymade garment factory owners to pay wages and bonus to the workers by today.
