Communications Minister Obaidul Quader on Sunday said a drive to demolish illegal establishments on both sides of the national and regional highways and stop the plying of unauthorised vehicles on those will begin on June 15.
He said this while talking to reporters after the maiden meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Safe Road at the Secretariat.
During the drive, a total of 16 bazaars –four in Dhaka division and two each in six other divisions — on both sides of the highways will be pulled down, the minister said.
Besides, he said, illegal speed breakers on the national and regional highways and several billboards on both sides of those as well as in two metropolitan cities of Dhaka and Chittagong will be removed.
Obaidul Quader also said no cattle market will be allowed by the roads and highways.
“The roads will be made free of unauthorised vehicles, including Nasimon, Karimon and Bhabhati, while risky trees felled during the eviction drive to make those fit for the vehicle plying.”
The minister said eight overload control machines were set up at eight points on different roads across the country to ensure road safety. “Initiatives have been to establish five more ones.”
Communications Minister and Chairman of the Cabinet Committee on Safe Road Obaidul Quader, Railways Minister Mojibul Haque, Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan, Commerce Minister GM Quader, Land Minister Rezaul Karim Hira and Cabinet Secretary M Musharraf Hossain Bhuiyan were, among others, present at the meeting.
