Accusing the leader of the opposition of resorting to hartal programmes repeatedly in her bid to protect the war criminals, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Friday called upon Khaleda Zia not to enforce any shutdown during the 8th Bangladesh Games beginning on Saturday and also during the ongoing HSC exams.
“I’ll urge the opposition leader not to enforce hartal during the 8th Bangladesh Games and the ongoing exams so that the preparations of the students are not hampered and their future does not face any uncertainty,” she said.
The Prime Minister was addressing a discussion meeting marking the 41st founding anniversary of Bangladesh Krishak League at her official residence Ganobhaban in the afternoon.
She alleged that various conspiracies are now being hatched because there are some people who did not want the country’s independence, do not want the Bengali nation makes further progress in agriculture, industrial development, food security, social security and socioeconomic development.
Hasina questioned why hartals are being enforced days after days in whose interest.
Taking a swipe at the anti-liberation forces for Fatikchhari incident, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina criticised the role of the BNP-Jamaat for hailing such incident. “They now issue threats to commit such incidents against in Bangladesh …and that means they would kill more people… killing people is their character.”
Hasina said they attacked a peaceful procession of Awami League in Fatikchhari; beat up the activists brutally using the loudspeakers of local mosques to misinform and instigate the innocent villagers (against the AL men) where some four to five men were killed and some remained missing apart from torching numerous vehicles and motorcycles.
Three people were killed and about 120 injured in a clash between the activists of AL and Jamaat-Shibir and Hefajat-e Islam at Kazirhat of Fatikchhari upazila in Chittagong on April 11. Over 100 motorcycles, four mini-trucks, three private cars, a fire-fighting vehicle and a microbus were torched during the clash.
Listing her government’s various steps to ensure the socioeconomic development of the country, she mentioned that the present government has been encouraging the poor people to go for micro savings as her government is not taking higher interests in the name of micro-credits.
In this regard, the Prime Minister said due to the pro-people initiatives of the present government some 5 crore people have been graduated to the middle class from the lower class, some four lakhs employment have been generated in the public sector while 78 lakh in the private sector.
Mentioning that her government is taking every step so that even one inch of land not does not remain uncultivated, she said that the Awami League-led grand alliance did not assume office to do business or change their own fates, rather to change the fates of the farmers, workers and the country’s people.
Hasina also urged all to supplement the government’s efforts so that Bangladesh could ensure its place at the global stage as a dignified nation keeping its head high without begging.
About the war crimes trial, the Prime Minister alleged that after the assassination of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in 1975, Ziaur Rahman stopped the trial process and freed the war criminals from jail.
She went on: “Even Khaleda Zia disgraced the victorious Bengali nation by including war criminals in her cabinet and also making the killer of Bangabandhu as parliament member through vote rigging in the controversial 1996 polls.
As the trial of the war criminals started, the Prime Minister alleged, various subversive activities are being carried out in the name of movements like burning to death sleeping drivers and killing them through pouring petrol and unleashing attacks apart from murdering policemen.
Agriculture Minister Begum Matia Chowdhury, AL joint general secretary Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif spoke at the programme chaired by Bangladesh Krishak League president Alhaj M Motahar Hossain Molla.
